Checklist to a killer forehand!

Compare your forehand with this checklist for the modern professional forehand

The checklist

The checklist below lists the key points I watch for when I teach the modern professional forehand. It incorporates movements common to most of the top players in the world.

  1. Open stance with weight on right foot.
  2. Left arm and elbow elevated to shoulder level during unit turn.
  3. Right elbow elevated and away from body during unit turn.
  4. Left hand on throat of the racket during unit turn.
  5. Shoulders turn but racket stationary relative to center of chest during unit turn.
  6. Unit turn does not end until left non-hitting hand aligns with right hip.
  7. Racket drops at 45 degree angle out to the side, right elbow extended and kept away from the body.
  8. At end of racket drop, racket positioned with string bed facing down as if placed on coffee table.
  9. Non-hitting left arm outstretched pointing to side fence.
  10. As a general rule of thumb, racket should be approximately at the racket drop position the moment the ball bounces.
  11. Loose grip on racket maintained.
  12. Heel of right foot raised at start of pull to contact.
  13. Butt cap of racket “pulled” to contact. Racket not “swung” to contact.
  14. Non-hitting arm retracted at shoulder level but not too early so as not to open up shoulders too soon.
  15. Right elbow extended and arm straightened at contact.
  16. Contact made way out in front of body.
  17. Angle at wrist released after contact.
  18. Wrist turned over with windshield wiper motion.
  19. Stroke finished with racket pointed at back fence.
  20. Stroke finished with right shoulder pointed towards net.
